Finding Joy in Small Expenses: Why Less Can Bring More

There is a common belief that spending large amounts of money is necessary for happiness.  I don't agree with that thinking.   I often set off for a day out with high hopes of treating myself to something really nice and which will just 'make my day'.

My search for that elusive satisfying purchase hasn't been thought out, its  just a vague idea of something catching my eye (preferably vintage) and which will make my life just perfect (I think).  I have read that when one finds the desirable item, it can trigger the release of dopamine in the brain.  Dopamine is a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, and its release can create a sense of joy and satisfaction.  This feeling of achievement can boost your mood and self-esteem.

I have found that I can get the same feeling of pleasure and happiness if I find an item only costing a few euro.  I don't have to spend hundreds to get the dopamine effect.  A cup of lovely frothy coffee, a book or a cozy blanket can do it just as well.  Value and happiness can come from the quality of the experience, not just the cost.

This of course shows how spending less can lead to financial freedom and reduce stress.  Small purchases can be guilt-free and add up to significant satisfaction over time.  Of course we also have to acknowledge that larger expenses can also bring happiness, but they might not necessarily be the key to lasting fulfillment.

I'd love to know how you feel about this.

Have a nice weekend
