Early 20th-Century Silk Cut-Velvet Evening Coat with Antique Lace
A remarkable full-length evening or opera coat, dating to approximately 1905–1915, made from a substantial woven silk cut velvet in bronze and black.
The textile is exceptionally striking, with raised black velvet leaf motifs set against a lustrous bronze satin ground woven with flowing, wave-like forms. The fabric appears to be a high-quality voided or cut velvet, likely produced for the luxury dress or furnishing market.
The coat has a dramatic, sweeping silhouette with generous sleeves and a front opening. Cream lace is used at the neckline and extensively around the inside hem, and there is evidence that matching lace may originally have trimmed the cuffs.
The interior reveals extensive hand construction and finishing, including a waist stay and silk facings. The garment appears to have been professionally dressmade, possibly by a private atelier, and shows evidence of later alteration or partial dismantling.
The lace is believed to be handmade and may pre-date the coat, suggesting that valuable earlier lace was reused in its construction.
